What is a Remote Online Notary?

Remote Notarez contract with Virginia Electronic Notaries. Our remote online notaries/virtual notaries must be Virginia commissioned notaries first. This means that they’re approved by the state of Virginia to be a traditional notary public. Being approved allows for the notarization of documents by adding a stamped notary seal or embossed raised seal to the documents while the signers are physically in front of them. After becoming a Virginia commissioned notary, the notary will then apply to become an Electronic Notary. There are several steps to this which includes sending the Secretary of the Commonwealth proof of their electronic seal backed by a digital certificate. When approved, the notary will receive an email with their approval. This means the signer will be able to electronically sign the document, but the individual is physically in front of the notary.

Remote online notarizations have a similar notarization process. The notary will meet with the signer remotely by using audio-visual conferencing. This is the step that makes them a Remote Online Notary Public - a notary that you meet online. As the name implies every step is done remotely and online. You will not meet your notary physically. Since the session will be completely online the signer will need to validate their identity with knowledge-based authentication, biometric validation and/or credential analysis. Once that is complete, the signer will be meeting with one of our remote notaries where they will electronically sign the uploaded documents. A designated Virginia Online Notary will then remotely notarize the documents and get them back to the signer!
